Reflections

Telling this story was challenging for both Artie and Vladek. What challenges do you think this task presented for both of them? How did these challenges manifest themselves throughout the texts? In what ways did Artie successfully overcome the challenge of telling his father's story?

Additionally, now that you have read the Maus books, what advantages do you think this medium has over other forms of testimony (oral, traditional written and visual)? What disadvantages exist?

Respond in 75-100 words with textual evidence to support your response.

The challenges I believe that Vladek faced while telling this story was reliving those events. He is not only telling Artie his story, he is remembering vividly the horrors that affected him to that day. The challenges I think that Artie was facing while telling this story is reliving the fact that he grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust and in the shadow of his “ghost brother” (Maus 2). These challenges manifest themselves throughout the texts when Vladek wants to stop riding the cycle and says "that's enough for today" and they stop working on the story that day. It shows that reliving it all at once was too much for him to take. Artie's challenges manifest throughout the context spread across the story, especially in "Prisoner on the Hell Planet" when it shows the duties he had, even when he was younger. They overcame these challenges later in the story through love for each other.
The advantages I think this medium has over other forms of testimony are that it is much easier to read for audiences that do not like to read and it gives the reader a more visual perspective on the story. A disadvantage is that some may overlook it because it is a comic book, which could be associated with a children's book. Another disadvantage is that some may not want to read a story about the Holocaust because maybe their school makes them read them or because they are too sad to read.

I think the enormous challenge that faces both Artie and Vladek is reliving what happened in the past based mostly on Vladek’s memory. Both also at times has a different opinion on what will be included in the story or what is important. For example, Vladek does not want Lucia’s part in the story and Artie thought of it as a great material and should be added. A generation gap existed between the two, resulting in Artie seeing things differently from Vladek or vice-versa just like when Artie gave the colored guy a ride. Artie cannot imagine Vladek being prejudice to a colored person after surviving the horror of the holocaust. These challenges manifest itself through argument or misunderstanding between father and son. Artie successfully overcome the challenge of telling his father’s story by just being very patient and understanding with his father maybe just to finish the book. Artie also started to see a therapist in Maus 2 to talk about his relationship with his father and helped to imagine or visualize Auschwitz.
I think the graphic novel as medium has advantage of the graphics or drawing making the story more clear and easy to understand. If done correctly the graphics also could be entertaining and could give a lot of symbolism. On the other hand, graphic novel may not be taken seriously or for real just like a comic book.

  3. Artie and Vladek both faced many challenges and difficulties in the stories Maus I and Maus II. Obviously the challenge for Arite was writing the actual story. For example in Maus II Artie says “I mean, I can’t even make any sense out of my relationship with my father… How am I supposed to make any sense out of Auschwitz” (14). This example shows how Artie was having a difficult time putting all the information he had from his father as well as coping with the relationship he has with his father. I think the novels provide a better medium than other forms of testimonies because you can visualize what exactly was happening. However, a disadvantage is you wouldn’t be able to as accurately interpret the tone of the author.(130)

  4. The challenge that both Artie and Vladek had was probably remembering the past, mainly when Anja committed suicide. Artie had a big challenge also when he was writing the story, thinking of all the horrible things his parents had to see during World War II. This book is very good for a younger audience learning about World War II, but it also should not be overlooked by people due to it being a comic book.

  5. Artie and Vladek both faced many challenges while making the book. Vladek faced more challenges than Artie, but they both faced challenges. Artie's challenge was dealing the fact that the only thing he had left of his mom was a horrendous story of her fight for survival. Vladek's challenge is reliving the events of the holocaust and actually remembering things the way they happened. Artie did a very good job of telling his father's story. This medium is very good because it is concrete once it is written. Many times if a story is told orally things are lost and details are left out, but since it is written in a book it is concrete. A disadvantage is that it is in the style of a comic book. Since it looks like a comic book, it may be noverlooked or not taken seriously. (143)

  7. I believe that a huge challenge that Vladek and Artie had was deciding on what to include and not include in the book. Vladek faced many challenges including the fact that his wife committed suicide, and having to relive the horrible past. Also, the truth about the past is becoming clear to Artie, and how his mother was struggling to survive. I think if this book was told orally, there would be a huge piece missing from the story. The disadvantage about it being written is that, it's a comic, and it may not be taken as serious as it should be.

  9. i think the biggest challenge that Artie and Vladek is thinking about the past and all that has happened, it can be hard to deal with the facts about what his parents lived through and saw and on top of that Anja committed suicide. Even though it is a comic book it has a strong message behind it i think it just makes the story easier to understand.

  11. The biggest challenge that artie and Vladek was having to think back and remember all the terrible things that happen during the holocaust. Especially for artie knowing that his mom had to live though this and how much she suffered and how many things she had to do just to live to see another day. I think that the way this story was written in a comic book style it may make people want to read it more and keep peoples attention. Also a disadvantage of having it in a comic book style is that people might not take it as serious as it really is.
