In this chapter we learned quite a few interesting things about Anja. She had secret Communist documents and was involved in conspirations. The documents were translated by her into German for an ex who’s from Warsaw. When she found out about the police looking for Communist documents, Anja hid them with the seamstress and got her arrested. Also, Anja had postpartum depression and had to go away to a sanitarium to get better which is another thing we found out about her in this chapter. Present day stories came up with interruptions, as stories from the past were being told. Vladek was sitting with his pills in front of him and spilled them a few times. He mentioned all his different health issues each time the pills became a distraction. EM F.H.S
In this chapter we learned that Anja had friends that were communists and was involved with helping them. She had communists documents. We also found out she had given birth to a premature baby boy named, Richieu. After giving birth to him she became very depressed and then they went to a sanitarium to feel better and to relax. Speigelman tells the present-day story when Artie goes to the apartment and sees his father counting his pills. As he is telling the story of Anja, they come as flashbacks. Vladek is sitting at the table counting his pills, he tells Artie that he has to take so many pills to stay alive, and how they keep him healthy. Which lead to the stories of Anja. TL FHS
Anja visiting a sanitarium just goes to show how stressful day to day life was at the time and how she had to deal with bad consequences due to bad connections. Vladek in present-day with his daily medications shows the physical toll of the holocaust, disregarding his age. I agree with your statement on the link of the two.
In chapter two we learned a lot more detail about the family. Anja was involved in translating communist documents into german from someone in Warsaw, Poland. Once the raids began, Anja involved the seamstress to help her hide the documents; the seamstress was arrested and imprisoned for three years before the charges were dropped. In October, 1937 their son Richieu was born. A few months after he was born Anja started showing signs of depression, her motivation to live was at an all time low. Wanting to do everything in his power to help his wife, Vladek took his wife to the Sanitarium in Czechoslovakia. This was at the beginning of the war, anti- semitism was present but not horrendous. Eventually, Anja's health increased enough for them to go back home. Speigelman balanced both stories by making it clear that Vladek's stories are all flashbacks while including events going on while the flashbacks were happening. Vladek would spill the pills and then continue about a random story (ex: the pillow) and mentioned health problems he is having every time the pills would fall. SH F.H.S
Art Spiegelman did a good job bringing the family into the book with chapter 2. Anja, Artie's mother wasn't a beautiful woman but a smart one and had her fair share of moments. She helped translate communist documents, which then lead to her hiding them with the seamstress and her arrest. In October, Anja and Vladek had a baby boy. Anja had become so stressed about it they decided to have her and Vladek go to a sanatarium. When full health was recovered they went back home, Vladek returned to a robbed factory he had started with his Father- In- Law. Art Spiegelman has these stories being told through flashbacks. Artie is visiting his father and socializing with him as these stories are being told. Vladek is counting pills and is so frustrated with his health and the past that he tends to spill the pills multiple times. JW FHS
In chapter two we learn that Artie's mother, Anja, translated communist documents for her ex. She was then afraid to get caught with them so she gave them to a seamstress who then got arrested with said documents. We also learn that Anja had to go to a sanitarium to take a break from everyday life because she was having breakdowns often. We are told these breakdowns are caused by giving birth to Richieu because it was too much strain on her. Spiegelman writes his father's present-day story while also writing about his father's past. His father talks about his present day ailments by using his pills, interrupting the story he is currently telling. AR F.H.S
In Chapter two we learn a great deal about Anja. She almost didn't end up with Artie's father because of an over-jealous women. We also learn that she was translating communist documents with her ex in the Warsaw ghetto. Anja even went as far as to hide these letters with a seamstress so the documents wouldn't be found by Nazi's. Unfortunately the seamtress was caught. Eventually Anja gets very depressed and is taken to a sanitarium in Czechoslovakia. She comes back a few months later good as new. The initial reasoning for being put in a sanitarium was thought to be stress from her first child. This story of Artie's mother, Anja is told through flashbacks with his father while he is organizing his daily medication. AB F.H.S.
We learn that Anja was involved in communist conspirations and she barely got away with it. She ran to a seamstress, who hid the translated messages but eventually got caught. She also gave birth to her first child Richieu, who does't survive the war. Both events lead her to being placed in a sanitarium due to depression and stress and she soon regains her emotional strength back. While telling the story, Vladek is organizing his daily pills. He knocks them over and gets ticked off while telling his story. Robert E. Lee High School
In Chapter 2 we learn about what happened to Anja and Vladek when they got married. Anja's father gave Vladek the money to start a textile industry and after they had their baby, Anja got depressed and went off to a sanitarium where they saw some of the anti-Semitic things the Nazis were doing in Europe. When they came back, they realized things with the Nazis were getting worse, so they moved back to Vladek's home town and he got summoned to be in the Polish army. CB R.E Lee
We find out that Anja has been translating communist messages in German. We find out that Anja and Vladek had a baby boy before they had Artie. Richieu died in the Holocaust, I assume. We find out that Anja is depressed and maybe even suicidal. Anja and Vladek go to stay at a sanitarium, so that Anja can feel better. On the way to the sanitarium, they see a Nazi flag. While Vladek is telling his story, he pauses and knocks over his pills a few times and we find out that he is sick.
Anna has been translating communist messages and passes them on. We've found out that giving birth was to much of a strain for her and she's hysterical and depressed. Anja also told her seamstress to hide a package and ended up getting the seamstress arrested. MS. R.E.Lee
I'm sure Anja is feeling very much guilt for getting the seamstress arrested. That was probably not what she thought was going to happen. On top she is having a child while in guilt. PF R.E. LEE
In this chapter we learn about Anja, Archie's mother. Anja gave birth to two boys, Richieu and Archie. Both of her sons were born prematurely. Richieu, sadly, didn't make it through the end of the war. Anja went crazy after giving birth. She became super depress and they sent her to a sanitarium. Spiegelman shows present day but showing up at his fathers house to listen to more stories about his experience in the Holocaust and his father is counting pills. PB F.H.S
Chapter 2 was about Anja, Archie's mother. We learned that Anja had a communist friend who she translated important documents for. We also learned that Archie had a brother who died during the war, and that after giving birth to Archie's brother, Anja became very depressed and did not want to live anymore. Dylan Hogsett R.E.Lee
In this chapter we learn that Anja was translating communist documents that were very important. After doing that she meets a seamstress who tells her that she'll hide the documents for her. Not long after the seamstress gets caught. Anja falls in a deep depression after having her baby Richieu, and does not want to live anymore. She the goes to a sanitarium to get better. Then Vladek gets in to talking about life in the ghetto. PF R.E. LEE
The fact that Anja didn't get caught with the communist documents is important. It would've changed not only Anja's life forever but also Vladek's. EM F.H.S
In this chapter we learn alot about Anja. WE learn that she is translating very important communist documents. Then she meets a seamstress who tells her how important it is that she hides the documents. The seamstress gets caught and Anja is diagnosed with severe depression after her son is born.
In this chapter We learn that Anja was translating communist documents that had very important information on them, Also after doing the translations she met a seamstress that told her how important it was for her to hide the documents. The seamstress was caught and Anja is diagnosed with severe depression after her child is born and wishes not to live anymore. Nbk Robert E, Lee H.S.
In this chapter we learn that Anja has been translating documents. Its very important that she keeps these documents hidden. Anja also started to suffer from severe depression after she gave birth.
Anja going to the sanitarium goes to show how severe her depression really was. Also it was important for her to do that in order to feel better. EM F.H.S
As chapter two opens, we learn many details that reveal much about Anja's Character. For example, we learn that she was translating hidden communist documents in which if she was caught, she would definitely be taken to the camps. Another point of information we learn from her is that she had another son, Richieu, who died in the war. This made Anja extremely sad and very depressed, so depressed that this situation came near a suicidal attempt. From this given information, I can infer that she was probably very anxious to get her children and Vladek to safety. I believe that she tried everything she could, but if she failed, she would go crazy. In other words, she could not handle her own failure. another event that occurs is that she gives a package to a seamstress for her to hide, that is until the seamstress is caught hiding a forbidden documents. (152) GC STA BLOCK 5
When the second chapter begins, we begin to learn that Anja has friends that are communist. At the time, to have communist associations was seen as a crime. So we can infer that Anja is willing to take the risk of having those friends and also harboring messages from the communists. We also learn that Anja can become severely depressed. After the birth of their first son, Richieu, she becomes extremely depressed. To the point where Vladek and her go to a sanitarium to alleviate her depression. While Vladek is telling Art, he is slowly and methodically counting his pills and arranging them in order. (105) STA JC Block 1
From the information we get through Vladek’s stories, Anja seems like a very interesting character. Chapter two covers the relationship between Vladek and Anja shortly after their marriage. We also learn that Anja is from a wealthy family; Anja’s father pays the seamstress, who was arrested for storing Anja Communist documents, to keep quiet, and Anja’s father also has the money to finance a textile factory for Vladek to own. Another scene that shows Anja’s father is exceptionally wealthy, is when the factory is robbed, he helps rebuild the factory, and it is up un running in little time. Anja herself is hit with a serious case of depression, which goes to lead Vladek into being very worried for her in the hardest times of Nazi Germany. (127) CA STA BLOCK 1
We learn about Artie’s mother, Anja, in Chapter two is that she had a boyfriend before Vladek that was a communist from Warsaw. Anja was part of the communist, but ends up being part of it because Vladek. He doesn’t want her to get into any more trouble and Vladek was about to end their marriage if Anja didn’t quit the communist. Her family is also rich and wealth that they gave Valdes a factory. Speigelman also tell the present-day of Artie within this segment is to show the old and new Vladek. He is showing what is it like to and not have Anja with his side. (108) RR STA Block 3
We learn about Anja in chapter 2. In chapter two she had a boyfriend. This was when Vladek was a communist from Warsaw. Anja ends up being a communist because of Vladek. Valdek wants Anja to stop being communist because of all the problems. Vladek was going to cancel their marriage if Anja didn't stop being a communist. In this chapter we learn that Anja's family is rich. We also learn that Anja is so rich that her family give Vladek a factory. I like that Speigelman shows Vladek in the past and present to make it easier for us. (99) AV STA BLOCK 3
