The panels on pages 100-103 connected me emotionally. It affected me because it is about his mothers suicide. Suicide is always a emotional subject. I think that he feels guilty about his mothers suicide. I also thought it was weird that a "friend of the family" found him crying during his mothers funeral and he made him feel guilty. I think that's really cruel. It also grabbed my attention because he switched from using animals to people.
That is also a part that emotionally connected me because of how serious suicide really is and how people are affected by it. The fact that the pages were darker helped grab my attention and set a different tone. EM F.H.S
you think that a friend of the family would be there to comfort you in a time of loss but this part of the graphic novel was much more darker than a basic idea. It was an attention grabber. JW FHS
I agree with josette. That part really connected me emotionally. What grabbed my attention was the part when he said he stayed with his girlfriend and was home late but if he would have been on time he would have found his mothers body. No one should have to come home and find their mothers and wife's dead body. M.S. R.E.Lee
Page 104, when Mala and Artie are discussing Vladek reading Artie's old comic book about his mother and Vladek comes upstairs. This reminds me of a personal experience that saddens me every time I think about it. This connected with me on an emotional level because I would react the same way that Vladek did. This in my mind shows how the reader can connect with a character no matter how different and intense their life experiences were. Robert E. Lee H.S.
The panels on page 104 connect with me on a emotional level. you can almost feel the sadness flowing from Vladek from finding an items that brings back memories of a lost loved one. I am pretty sure anyone can connect to that moment Dylan Hogsett, R.E. Lee
I agree on what you're saying. You can feel the separation and sadness throwing itself on you from the book. Most people can connect with this in some way. Jw FHS
The panels on page 103-104 is about Anja's suicide. It connected with me from a deep emotional level. Though suicide is a hard thing to deal with you can feel how sad Vladek is because of this.
I agree because it is very hard to lose someone who you loved so much and i would feel the same way he did if i lost the person i cared about the most in my life. CD F.H.S
The panel on page 103-104 connect with me on very deep emotional level. You can feel the sadness and depression going through Vladek mind. Suicide is a very hard thing to deal with, You can see how hard it had hit him. Nbk Robert E, Lee H.S.
On page 83 the panel that really grabbed my attention was the one with the maus characters being hung. And in that panel it said that those people were hung there for a week. That just grabbed my attention because it could have been anyone and heck if we were there when this took place you never know it could have been one of us. It could have been and friend or a beloved family member and seeing that happening could just destroy someone emotionally. CD F.H.S
I agree, I don't like seeing deaths like that, especially to people that didn't do anything wrong. Things like this disturb me, and it was happening through out the whole holocaust like it was nothing. PF R.E. LEE
I think page 113 connected with me the most. Vladek and the others went against their gut feelings to help save the man and he turned around and told the Gestapo where they were. They were completely betrayed and it really resonated with me how horrible and selfish people really are. SH F.H.S
I agree with the panel above, about his mother's suicide. It is very depressing and I think that a kid should never have to deal with his parents suicide, especially in dark times like the Holocaust. It feels like he might not have any more faith and will have a hard time getting through the Holocaust. CB Lee HS
The panel on page 102 at the bottom kind of made me mad. Usually when someone loses a loved you're supposed to comfort them. The man mocked him in a way, Artie already knew that he shouldn't have neglected his mother like that. He didn't need to be told by someone who didn't know what was going on. I couldn't really connect with this, but thinking about it makes me a little mad. PF R.E. LEE
At page 113 is really messed up, and it did make a connection with me. Vladek and the others completely snitched on the man. It really makes me mad how wrong and horrible people can be in this world.
The part of the story that I felt emotionally connected to was page 83 and 84. On 83, the panel where it says "they hanged there one full week" made me feel emotional towards the story. Not only the fact that they were being hung as an example for the rest of the Jews but that they let them hang there for a week straight. Then on page 84 Vladek said how he was afraid to go outside for a few days because he did not want to pass the hanging Jews. Also that Vladek still cries when he thinks about it. AR F.H.S
On page 83 and 84 I felt emotionally connected to the story. It would be terrible to go outside and see people just hanging in the street. I could not even imagine how overwhelming, sad, and scary that would be. Personally knowing the people that were hung just makes it even worse and the fact that they were out there for a whole week. Vladek was haunted by the image of them hanging and frightened to even go outside for a few days. I know if I was in the situation it would be terrifying for me too which is what really got be connected emotionally to the story and grabbed my attention. EM F.H.S
I felt emotionally connected on page 104 with Anja's suicide. I felt a connection because you could just tell how sad Vladek was and you could feel the emotion behind the panel. Suicide is a very hard thing to deal with and you can sense the strength Vladek had to hold. PB FHS
When people are hung in the streets on pages 83 and 84, I got emotionally connected to the story. You as a reader can just imagine walking outside and looking straight into the face of a dead man or woman with a noose around their neck. Its horrifying and gives me the chills. This event took a mental toll on Vladek as well, he started to live even more in fear. This section of the story made my jaw drop and heart stop. Death was a theme of the Holocaust but the ways of death were unorthodox. They treated life as if it were nothing and its really just an unbelievable thing. JW FHS
To me, the last page of Maus II gave me the strongest emotional connection. The last page gives a powerful sense of conclusion, which is depicted through the illustrations. More specifically, the illustrations of Anja and Vladek reuniting and the next illustration, the one of both of their grave, show a happy ending after a life of pain and struggling. These last panels grabbed my attention because it was a bittersweet moment. It is sad that Vladek dies, but it makes the reader feel happy for him in a way because he passed away in peace, which his son, while concluding his story. (103) CAA STA BLOCK 1
The panels that most emotionally grabbed me were the ones depicting Art when his mother had just committed suicide. Since the panels are drawn in such a different way compared to the rest of the book, it really gives a sense of uniqueness. I believe that Art purposely drew those panels in such a way to shock the reader and to have them taken back at the emotions that Art was experiencing at that moment. The emotions that are depicted on the faces of the character really say a thousand words. While looking at those faces, you can truly see what Art is trying to convey. (106) STA JC Block 1
On page 66-67, Vladek is talking to Artie about how things and situations would e way different if only Anja was there beside Vladek instead of Mala. I believe he is tired of her and really misses Anja. he compares the two by saying how many more things he would have been able to do if only Anja was with him. Why does he say this? He says this because he feels pressured with everything that is going on; on top of that matter, Mala always talks to him about money and his will, but Vladek has that money for his son Artie. (103) GC STA BLOCK 5
4. The panels that affected me were the panels of his mother's suicide. These panels were on pages 100-103. This affected me the most because suicide is always a hardship to get over especially if the person who died is a relative. This affected me because if that happened to my mother I wouldn't be able to stand. I think I would go crazy without having my mom. I think for Artie this was a huge hardship to get over because not having anyone to talk to. He would talk to his dad but he didn't like his dad very much in the first book. This part grabbed my attention because you can feel the sadness and emotions in the book. You can feel what Artie was feeling when his mother committed suicide. (120) AV STA BLOCK 3
In pg. 114 looking at all those reminds the childhood of Vladek of what he was like growing up. It show different versions of Vladek and how he looked like back then. It grabbed my attention because I have picture of me in my album like what Vladek had as growing up. It remind me of my childhood of what it was like for me growing up in the Philippines and me having to leave everything behind like my families and friends. Each picture tells us a story of how we grow up and will always be part of us in our life and memories. (105) RR STA Block 3

ReplyDeleteI agree. This also caught my attention since it had to do with the way I answered my response. This is a standout section in the graphic novel.
