Valdeks life pre WWII was simply and much like any young mans life. In the beginning of this graphic novel Valdek describes himself as a dashing young man, good looking, ambitious, smart and resourceful. He thinks his life is a rough yet historically compact. As he gets near to the begging of WWII his story gets more interesting. For example in the book when Valdek and Anja get married and short after he finds out that Anja has been helping her old boyfriend translate communist papers into German. Valdek is not proud of the way his life had to turn out but is glad to tell his son the history of the holocaust. (113)

I agree with Keoni on his comments about Vladek starting off as a typical kid, and finally realizing what life was really like. While growing up in pre-war Poland, and a large portion of Maus discovers his experiences throughout the Holocaust. Throughout Vladek’s life, many deaths occured within his own family. His first son Richieu died as a victim of the Holocaust. Vladek’s wife. Anja, kills herself in 1968. All of these unfortunate events create a personality for himself, that mostly reflects the Holocaust. Valued grew up just like us, confident in who he was, but also knew he had family issues. Not only were deaths an issue in Vladek's family, but as Keoni said Anja had been helping out her old boyfriend translate communist papers into German. This was not a necessary process for Anja, especially after just getting married to the "love of her life." Vladek didn't appreciate the way his entire life had funneled out, but he was still proud to share his story and how his whole life played out. (174)
Before World War II, Vladek was like any young working person. He says on page 12, “I was in the textiles- buying and selling- I didn’t always make much, but always I could make a living.” He settled down into his job, finally got married, and started a family. He mentions on page 30, “By October 1937, the factory was going, and it was born, my first son, Richiev”. Vladek had a normal life with a bright future in front of him...before the war started, that is. (88)
I agree with Tim, Valdek had a normal life before the war. He had a normal job and later he owned a factory. He got married and had a kid just like any normal person would. On page 16, he says, "Yes, but I have my business." He had work to get back too and that was important to him. He said he was a very handsome, charming, smart, and resourceful. He said to Lucia that he didn't like Anja only for her looks but her kindness towards him. He had a very normal future coming up in his life... before the war happened. (104)

Vladek's perception of the world was that everything was all right. In the beginning of the story, he is full of happiness after he marries his girlfriend, Anja. (p. 22) There are times when Vladek is scared, but he thinks everything is fine. He is excited after the birth of his first son, Richieu. (p.30) He views on life are filled with joy and excitement in the beginning of the story. But, once World War II begins, his world spirals into chaos. (82)
I would have to agree with Jimmy on how Vladek was just fine with his life. Vladek had a job which he said, "I was in textiles-buying and selling- I didn't make much, but always I could make a living." I agree with Jimmy, he felt that life was great and fine. He had a job with not that big of a pay but was happy with what he had and made a living out of it. The story follows up on how he Marries a lady named Anja and becomes he's future. After all that he had a little child , a baby boy, his name was Richiev.
