Family Dynamics

What was the relationship between Eli and his father while in camp? For example, did they rely on one another or did the stress of the experience strain their relationship? How would you describe the relationship? Explain your thoughts using textual evidence.

  1. Eli has always looked at his father as being rather static throught out the book. We mostly hear Eli talking about his feelings and thoughts,so it leaves room for us to interpret what his father was thinking or feeling during his experience. In the book,Eli sees prisoners who are mean, nasty and selfish, and his relationship with his dad reminds him of 2 things:a(There's life outside of the Holocaust and B)He has a good heart, and this experience isn't making him bitter.-Paige Gergely

  2. Eli looked at his father as a static character through out the whole entire book. While reading the book we hear Eli talk about what he felt and the thoughts that came across his mind, which interprets what his father felt at the same time. Eli realized through prisoners that beyond the Holocaust there is a life a better life and secondly he realized that his father has a heart and the experiences they faced did not make him a bitter man.

  4. Were there other parent/child relationships that Eli observed? How did his relationship with his father compare to what he saw?

  5. Eli really looked up at his father and thought life was good outside of the holocaust. Eli showed his emotions so it showed what the dad thought. others were nasty in the camps so it showed eli had a good heart

  6. They had a pretty good relationship, they remained strong, and helped each other as much as they could. They kind of relied on each other a little bit, but not completely and by no means did this even tear them apart.I think they had a pretty good relationship for being in the situation they are in.

  7. Eli and his father had a strong unbreakable bond of love. Throughout the book Eli and his father "leaned" on each other to try to stay alive. For example, when they were forced to run in the snow at night towards the end of the book: Eli tried to give his father courage to continue. Their relationship was strong even in the darkest times of the Holocaust. In fact, Eli's father gave him hope to survive the Holocaust and tell his story.

  8. Eli and his father had an unbreakable bond beyond each other. Throughout the story they had to rely and help each other on the journey even if there was no sign of hope. Eli talks about how his dad looked like "skin and bone" and he tried to help his father even though there wasn't much to do. Eli tried to "pump up" his father even if his was tired too. Eli had a good heart and loved and cared for his father because he probably knew that his father was the last thing he had left in his life in result of the Holocaust.
