Life is a series of choices.

Eli was faced with many difficult decisions during the Holocaust. We can NEVER judge what happened as we never have been faced with a similar situation, and hope never to be.

Take a moment to look back at how Eli judges himself and his decisions. Explain your responses with evidence from the text.

Of what decisions was he proud?

What decision did he say made him feel "ashamed forever"?

  1. It's very easy to feel as if you did something to deserve such punishment whenever you are being treated as Eli is .However, how you handle it can make all the difference. I think that Eli kept a very good head on his shoulders. He said that he realized his father always being there made him feel as if he was still a good person..He still had someone to love whereas most of the peopole there were seperated from their family or loved ones. Eli becomes shameful when he sees his father starving and turning into skin and bones..literately. -Paige Gergely

  2. Eli became very ashamed when he looked at his father and noticed that his father was turning into skin and bones because he was so hungry and didn't have anything to eat. Eli was proud of himself because he kept reminding himself that he was a good person whenever he looked over his shoulder and realized that his dad was always there with him.

  4. I believe that it was a strong decision to look over his father's shoulder, after all, he had raised him to be the man he was. He should be proud of his actions because not just caring for yourself in a situation like that is a very brave thing to do.

  5. I think Eli tried to be strong while watching his father basically die right in front of him, it was good that he looked over his shoulder and he's lucky he got to spend more time with his father than most of the other people because of being separated.

  7. Do you think that love helped keep him alive?

  8. I absolutely think love helped to keep him alive. The power of positive thought/love can go very far even in the most desperate of situations. There is so much evidence from the Holocaust to show this.

  10. Eli was embarrassed of himself and his father because they were so skinny. His father was starving, and had no food and there was really nothing Eli could about it, which made him feel terrible. He is proud of himself for doing as much as he could to help his father stay alive longer. I feel like the love they shared for each other helped them survive longer.

  11. Eli cherished every amount of food that he could get. He was constantly worried about the health of his father. The Holocaust had caused both Eli and his father to starve and become unhealthy. Despite having an emaciated body, Eli still had his personality which was loving and caring one. He was able to maintain this attitude with the help of his father who always was with him. This love, in my opinion helped him keep his desire to survive.

  12. I believe hope and love helped Eli survive through the Holocaust. Eli always had someone to love and rely on during the Holocaust, his father. Without his father I think Eli could might lose some of his faith. Eli always had someone to live unlike some of the people during the Holocaust. The decision that made him feel ashamed forever was that he had to take care of his father. His father looked terrible during the Holocaust and literally looked like skin and bone. I think it was a tough decision because it was hard to see his father like that. With love he took care of him as much as he could even though there wasn't much to do. Eli had faith that his dad would be alright and hoped that they could live until the end of the Holocaust. I think he should be proud of himself because of the actions he has done. Not only did he take care of his father during the Holocaust, but he had to take care of himself too.

  13. What i think got Eli through this hardship was his love and commitment. To finishing what his father started and when he had to see his father as emaciated as one can be and starve to his very last second of life, was one of those assets to keep Eli going, that's what his father wanted him to do, and that's what he did.
